Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye condition which is characterised by damage to the optic nerve and retina, causing progressive vision loss. Glaucoma is often, but not always, associated with increased pressure of the fluid in the eye (aqueous humour). Glaucoma has few to no symptoms in the early stages; it is not until the condition is more advanced does the sufferer become aware of vision loss. At Optiko we utilise Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a non-invasive imaging test to detect glaucoma. OCT uses light waves to take cross-sectional images of your retina. OCT allows the optometrist to see each of the retina’s distinctive layers, which can be used to map and measure their thickness. The retinal nerve fibre layer thickness measurements help with the diagnosis of glaucoma. Studies have shown that OCT technology can detect glaucomatous damage up to 8 years before vision loss.
